INTRODUCTION TO THE FOUR C's OF DIAMONDS

Picture
Diamonds are often the most significant piece of jewellery you'll ever purchase, usually an engagement ring, wedding ring, anniversary gift, or other symbolic pieces of jewellery. The process of buying a diamond can often be a daunting one, such a wealth of information on this most precious of gemstones can lead to a lot of confusion.

However, it is unlikely that you will ever research a diamond & not come across the term "The 4C"s which refers to what has been agreed as the four key factors that determine the value and the quality of a diamond. Below, we have outlined the 4C's (Cut, Colour, Clarity & Carat Weight) in what believe is the simplest, yet fully informative way possible, to help you with your diamond buying journey.

We select our diamonds using a universal standard certified by the G.I.A (Gemological Institute Of America). This ensures that Majesty Jewellers sets it's creations with the highest - quality diamonds, by being very selective through the G.I.A criteria known as the 4C's; Cut, Colour, Clarity & Carat Weight.

Every diamond of more than 0.30 carats comes with a G.I.A certificate and individual certificate and individual certificate number engraved on the stone. Invisible to the naked eye, this engraving guarantees the authenticity and uniqueness of our diamonds.

ANATOMY OF A DIAMOND

Picture
Diamond cut is the most important property to increase it's beauty because a well-cut diamond reflects lights to maximise the stone's brilliance. A diamond with perfect colour and clarity could nevertheless have poor brilliance if it is not well cut. After proper cutting, the size of the stone may reduce by half but it's market value may increase more than four times for it's brilliance and sparkle.

Diamonds have a unique ability to manipulate light efficiently. This exceptional ability can be revealed and maximised only by cutting and polishing the diamond to an extremely high level of accuracy. It is very essential to know Diamond Anatomy before understanding "CUT".

Picture
  • Diameter: Width of a diamond measured through the Girdle.
  • Table: Largest facet of a gemstone.
  • Crown: Top portion of a diamond extending from the Girdle to the Table.
  • Girdle: Intersection of the Crown and Pavilion which defines the perimeter of the diamond.
  • Pavilion: Bottom portion of a diamond, extending from the Girdle to the Culet.
  • Culet: Facet at the tip of a diamond. The preferred Culet is not visible with an unaided eye (graded "none" or "small").
  • Depth: Height of a diamond measured from the Culet to the Table.

CUT

Picture
Cut indicates both the proportions of the diamond cut, and the shape that is given to the gem. The cut, which requires able human intervention, is important as it determines the refraction of light and consequently the gem's brilliance and sparkle. There are also multiple diamond cuts used for different pieces of jewellery: oval diamonds, marquise diamonds, pear shaped diamonds, heart shaped diamonds, princess cut diamonds, carre cut diamonds, emerald cut diamonds, tapered diamonds, cushion cut diamonds, baguette diamonds, rose cut diamonds.

Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and scintillate so intensely. We often think of a diamond's cut as a shape (round, emerald, pear etc), but a diamond's cut grade is really about how well a diamond's facet interact with light. Majesty Jewellers only hand selects diamonds that adhere to precision artistry and workmanship that is required to fashion a stone so it's proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond. We recommend only diamond cuts with an "Excellent" or "Very Good" cut grade.

CUT GRADING RATINGS

Picture
The cut of the diamond can affect the way the light catches the stone, effecting the way it sparkles. The way diamond is cut affects three important diamond - attributes:

  • Brilliance - the total light reflected from a diamond
  • Fire - the dispersion of light into the colours of the spectrum
  • Scintillation - the flashes of light, or sparkle, when diamond is moved

A perfectly cut diamond will allow rays of light from all sides to bend towards the centre of the stone and be reflected back through the top of the stone in a burst of rainbow coloured light. Diamonds with a poorer cut will allow light to "leak" or " escape" through the base or sides of the stone.

A diamond that is cut too deep will allow most of the light to be lost through the sides of the stone as light is reflected to opposite facets at the wrong angle. This can give the diamond the appearance of having a black middle. If the diamond cut is too shallow, then light may be lost through the bottom of the stone and so, produce a dulled reflection.

The quality and grade given to the cut of the diamond can be measured by the following attributes:

  • Proportion: This refers to the relationship between the table size, crown angle and pavilion depth. This affects how the stone interacts with light (making it sparkle) and there are many proportion combinations available.
  • Symmetry: This refers to the precision of the shape and placement of the facets and again affects the stone's relationship with light.
  • Polish: This refers to the overall condition of a gem's facet surface and is the finishing touch put on a newly cut and crafted diamond.
Picture
The G.I.A cut grade system included ratings of Excellent, Very Good, Fair and Poor. G.I.A does not assign an Ideal cut and Excellent rating is their highest cut grade. Cut refers to the quality and precision of the cuts used to create a diamond's facets. It measures how well a diamond reflects light and generates sparkle. Cut has the biggest impact on a diamond's beauty.

  • Excellent: Maximum fire and brilliance. Reflects nearly all of the light that enters the diamond, creating exceptional sparkle and life
  • Very Good: Properly reflects most of the light that enters the diamond, producing superior fire and brilliance. Under normal lighting conditions, appears very similar to Excellent cut but, for a lower price
  • Good: Reflects a majority of the light that enters the diamond, for an above average appearance. An excellent value compared to higher cut grades
  • Fair: Allows much of the light entering the diamond to escape from the sides or bottom, reducing perceived fire and brilliance. More acceptable in diamonds of less than 0.75 carats, where differences in sparkle and more difficult to perceive
  • Poor: Allows most of the light entering the diamond to escape from the sides or bottom. The diamond may appear noticeably dull and lifeless, even to an untrained eye. We only offer " Excellent" & "Very Good" cut diamonds

COLOUR

Picture
The colour evaluation of most quality diamonds is based on the absence of colour. A pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water and consequently, a higher value. At Majesty Jewellers  we use the G.I.A, D - Z colour - grading system which measures the degree of colourlessness in a diamond.

Each diamond offered to our clients is compared under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions to masterstones of established colour value. Majesty Jewellers specialise in white diamonds which exhibit grades from D - G and fancy coloured diamonds ranging in all colours.
Picture

CLARITY

Picture
Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in earth. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called "inclusions" and external characteristics called "blemishes". The evaluation of diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature and position of these characteristics, as well as, how these affect the overall appearance of the stone.

While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher it's value. At Majesty Jewellers all our diamonds are hand-picked twice and are only selected if the diamond is eye clean by nature and includes (if any) inclusions will not effect the diamond in it's life. We specialise in clarity grades from Flawless to SI on the G.I.A scale.
Picture

CARAT WEIGHT

Picture
The size of a diamond is expressed in terms of it's weight in carats and points; 100 points = 1.00 carat. The carat weigh refers to the diamond weight and is a rough reflection of the overall size of the diamond (but not the quality of the diamond). A diamond's value increases exponentially with size, meaning that 1.00ct diamond will typically cost more than twice the price of a 0.50ct stone of similar quality.

Prices also tend to step up at the most popular weights such as 0.50cts, 0.70cts and 1.00ct, so often you achieve better value if you can find a diamond just below one of these levels. For example, instead of a 1.00 carat diamond (6.4mm), consider a 0.90cts (6.2mm). The difference in size will be negligible but, savings here can be significant.
Picture

DIAMOND FLUORESCENCE

Picture
Emission of visible light by a material when it is exposed to certain energy sources such as, radiation or ultraviolet light. Flourescence only continues as long as the material is exposed to the energy source.

In gemology, fluorescence refers to the property some diamonds have of glowing when exposed to ultravioletlight, when such diamonds are observed under incandescent or natural light, then can often have a milky appearance - even when they have a good clarity.

Majesty Jewellers accepts only diamonds with zero to faint fluorescence and carries no diamonds whose appearance in daylight is compromised by this unique property. The G.I.A fluorescence grade system includes ratings of None, Faint, Medium, Strong & Very Strong.
